JIMMY DANKO

INSPIRED BY PLAY, MADE IN L.A.

Los Angeles artist, Jimmy Danko, creates contemporary oil paintings on wood panel utilizing 80’s & 90’s toys and cultural references. He invites viewers to embark on a time-capsuled journey with him through his sculptural use of oil and acrylic painting realism, and challenges us to remember our childhood refrains of unbridled discovery by helping us ask “How can this perfect day last forever?”

Creating worlds in your mind, where you are bursting with optimism and oblivious to the high fructose corn syrup marshmallows floating in the brightly colored milk you hurriedly drain before dashing outside to stage battles with foes from other realms, star systems and dimensions. Reluctantly returning home at nightfall, breathless and drained from a day spent hopping fences, climbing trees and launching bikes into oblivion, so many adventures that seemed impossible for one day to contain.

Stay here, in this space that elevates those dreams and adventures where they can be cemented in time-capsules, on repeat, forever.

The Gorilla

As a kid I was fascinated by primates. Fast-forward years later to the first painting I ever attempted. Staring at that blank canvas, I was stumped as to subject matter but quickly landed on the idea of a collage of primates, one of which was a gorilla. As I swiped my brush, loaded with paint, across the brow of the gorilla, I knew was hooked on painting for good and a by-product of that revelation was that I had a new muse. The ‘Danko Gorilla’ has taken on various forms and iterations–continuing to evolve, lockstep with my work. The gorilla has been populated all over the world, through my art, prints, t-shirts and stickers. Read more about the story of the Gorilla here.
