Ride or Die

"Ride or Die”

UPDATE: SOLD

This piece was inspired by trips to Six Flags as a kid and the external and internal moments of exploratory adventure. The ego and the alter ego – they emerge with our consciousness often very early in life. Who we were under the watchful eyes of our parents or chaperones was in stark contrast from who were when unleashed in the gated confines of a funpark on our own. With that independence there was a freedom of the imagination, often mischievous, that was only constrained (or amplified) by the company we kept, i.e., our closest friends and confidants. This duality of our youth is a fork in the road that we encounter throughout our life: succumbing to who we are expected to be (right or wrong) – versus exploring who we truly are. As we relate to the context of our surroundings we are presented with a choice of who to be. Every adventure provides an opportunity that reinforces our path and leads us to the present. There is always both light and dark, and each makes the other possible.

Into the Fray

“Into the Fray”

UPDATE: SOLD

12”x12”, oil & acrylic on wood panel.

This is the first piece in a series called “Plastic Perceptions”. By painting the same composition with different hues, the series explores how we perceive the world around using color as a vehicle. The circle background is a subtle nod to the “Spot” paintings by Damien Hirst where he explores the harmonies of color. For my series, by adding in another element – the soldier – color is filtered through a secondary lens of perception. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will go to the @semperfifund. “Serving all branches of the military, Semper Fi Fund provides emergency financial assistance to post 9/11 service members who are wounded, critically ill, or were injured during their service.” It’s a small way I can give back through my art to those who helped keep us safe on the home front and around the world.

“Meet People, Get in Adventures”

UPDATE: SOLD

(A homage to the 25th Anniversary of Pulp Fiction)
36” x 48” (91cm x 122cm)
Oil and acrylic on archival wood panel

On the surface the painting is an ode to the days of renting VHS tapes from the local video store. On a closer look though, the piece is embedded with a number of references to one of my all-time fave movies, Pulp Fiction (1994). The quote running vertically on the case label is from when Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) has an epiphany about his life path while eating at the diner with Vincent Vega (John Travolta). He proclaims he is going to quit his job and just 'walk the earth'. The time on the bottom left references a flashing VCR but is also the time on the gold watch that Capt Koons (Christopher Walken) presents to a young Butch (Bruce Willis) as he tells the origin story of the watch. The toy soldier atop the tape references Butch’s great grandfather, grandfather and father, all of whom carried the watch during their service. Lastly there is the address near the top of the case. This is the address of the original Blockbuster Video in my hometown of Muskego, Wisconsin. A place where I meandered up and down the aisles and rifled through stacks of ‘recently returned’ in hopes of finding some gem like Lost Boys to watch over the weekend. The date below the address is the day Pulp Fiction was released on VHS.

The painting was originally displayed at Gallery 1988 in LA as part of a 90’s themed group show containing work inspired by pop culture of the decade.

“Cornelius (AKA Space Monkey)”

UPDATE: SOLD

Dimensions: 15” x 32” (38cm x 81cm)
Oil paint on archival wood panel

From Jimmy: “This painting was created for the 90’s cult movie group show at Gallery 1988. As cult movies go, it’s difficult for me to think of one that struck a nerve more than Fight Club. However, rather than use the soap or other imagery from the movie, I wanted this piece to be geared toward those of us who have seen it more times than we can remember.”

After sculpting the bar of soap out of wood and designing the label used to create the still life, these are some of the movie references that were worked into the piece:

1. Paper Street Soap Company was the name of the soap business.

2. The action figure is Cornelius from Planet of the Apes. Cornelius was also one of Edward Norton’s aliases at support groups.

3. “Without pain, without sacrifice we would have nothing. Like the first monkey shot into space. Space Monkey!” -Tyler Durden

4. Smiley face on the label = the symbol of Project Mayhem

5. 1999 was the year Fight Club was released
